A magnetic reed switch is an electrical switch operated by an applied magnetic field. It consists of two thin ferromagnetic metal reeds sealed inside a small glass tube filled with inert gas to prevent corrosion. When a magnetic field is brought close to the switch, the reeds are magnetized and either come together (normally open type) or move apart (normally closed type), thus opening or closing the circuit.

The device is passive, meaning it does not require power to operate, and is known for its reliability, long life, and resistance to environmental factors due to its sealed construction. 

• Normally Open (NO): Contacts close when a magnet is near.
• Normally Closed (NC): Contacts open when a magnet is near.
• Changeover (SPDT): Switches between two circuits when activated.
